All Day Lycoming/Clinton County Community Needs Assessment

Get that Call! – Local Agencies Begin Assessing Community Needs February 15, 2018 – Every three years, many nonprofit organizations – from social service agencies to health care providers and others – are required to gather a detailed picture of the needs in their service areas. For several agencies in Lycoming and Clinton counties, this “Community Needs Assessment” was last completed in 2015, so it is time to reach out to residents again. Lycoming College and the Lycoming County United Way have been working together on assessing community needs since 2005. This year, STEP will once again be partnering with these two organizations, while two more agencies are strengthening the combined effort: the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania (FCFP) and River Valley Health & Dental Clinic (RVHDC). FCFP and RVHDC will bring a focus on arts/culture and healthcare needs, respectively. The Community Needs Assessment includes objective data, the Telephone Survey, Partner Agency Survey, Customer Survey, and focus groups. The Telephone Survey will be completed by Lycoming College. Residents are urged to answer calls from the college in the coming months. The survey will take about 5-10 minutes to complete, and will reach the community through both landlines and mobile numbers using registered voter databases. If the call is not answered, a callback number will be left so the individual can respond at a more convenient time. The Partner Agency Survey will be used to assess the needs as seen by social service agencies. The Customer Survey will reach individuals who receive social services and those who are not registered voters. In addition to the surveys, focus groups of community representatives, consisting of 8-12 individuals with extensive experience in their respective topics, will discuss subject areas in greater depth. The completed Community Needs Assessment will be widely distributed in late fall this year and used to shape programs, initiatives, and funding strategies for the partner agencies. An accurate, up-to-date Community Needs Assessment allows organizations to target programming toward concrete community needs and, in some cases, to discontinue programs not supported by the assessment’s findings. “We are hopeful that Lycoming and Clinton county residents will answer the call and give us their valuable time to make this survey process work,” said Jim Plankenhorn, STEP President & CEO. “Only by checking on the needs of the community can STEP, and our partners, provide the most needed services and use our funding efficiently and effectively.”
